Maybe I’m biased coming from a precision engineering background on the accuracy and precision needed, as for the majority of users where a recommended chain wear is up to 0.5%. This would mean a whopping 7.2mm to 8.8mm difference depending on chain length but easy to measure a ball-park figure.\u003cbr\u003eWear and longevity of drivetrains is becoming more and more important with the relentless torque an e-bike can kick out and increasing drivetrain costs. Our chain length measurement rig is aimed at being able to provide more accurate and repeatable measurements needed in chain optimisation and the characterisation of lubricant ‘wear prevention’ properties.  \u003cbr\u003eRepeatability and accuracy of the rig without a temperature-controlled room was the aim. We achieved an accuracy of 5microns (0.005mm) and repeatability between tests, of a worst case new ‘packet greased’ chain, of 20microns. This repeatability can be greatly improved with a degreased chain and believe it or not, better control of the temperature the chain is stored at. We are currently able to supply these at discounted prices due to excess stock of the linear carriage components, originally built in house for XYZ machines.
